Douglas firs are evergreen conifers, a kind of tree. There are five species of Douglas fir: two in western North America (Coast Douglas fir and Rocky Mountain Douglas fir), one in Mexico, and two in eastern Asia. Although called firs, the Douglas firs are not true firs.
Use the botanical name when ordering seeds (bulbs, etc.) or when looking up information in the library. Common names vary by nation, culture, and region, and sometimes the same common name is applied to different plants.
Family: Pinaceae (pine)
Douglas fir is used in about one third of the homes built in the U.S.
