Epona was first worshipped by the Gaulic people of the area that is now France. Worship of Epona spread throughout the Celtic people. When the Celts came into contact with the Romans, the worship of Epona spread to the Romans.

Epona / Rhiannon — The Mare Goddess. She was the Gallo-Roman and Welsh Great Queen, venerated at woodland altars (nemeton) across Celtic Europe, and especially near Alesia in central France. Horse worship and sacrifice were rites associated with the migration memories of ancient peoples from India to Spain. The Beihingen Epona plaque shows the goddess feeding seven horses; in the lower panel grain is being pulled by horses and a pig is being prepared as feast for the goddess. The bas-relief, from Denon in Gaul, shows the fertility maid on mare accompanied by a foal, with her hand bestowing blessing.
