Carrier oils or base oils are used to dilute essential oils and herbs.
Essential oils are too powerful to be used at full strength. Therefore, in both magick and aromatherapy, a drop (or a few drops) of essential oil are added to the carrier oil. Never use more essential oil than is necessary. Usually a single drop is all that is needed. See the article on essential oils for important information.
It is important to use cold pressed carrier oils. Almost all grocery store oils are heated and therefore have less magickal and therapeutic benefit.
While essential oils can’t go rancid (although they can evaporate), carrier oils can go rancid. Make sure you purchase cold-pressed carrier oils that are natural and unadulterated. Natural Vitamic E can be added, as it acts as a natural preservative.
Pour your base oil (also called carrier oil) into the sterilized glass jar. A typical amount is 1/8th of a cup of base oil. Any of the following listed oils will be great for a base oil for magickal uses. Jojoba is not actually an oil (it is a liquid wax), but it serves the same purpose and will last much longer than real oils because it never goes rancid (although the essential oils will eventually degrade over time). A common mistake it to make too big a batch of magickal oils. A little goes a long way and any excess will eventually go bad, wasting your expensive materials.
