orange tree

Oranges are a citrus fruit from the orange tree.

botanical information:

Botanical name: Citrus sinensis or Citrus sonensis

    Common name: orange, sweet orang

Use the botanical name when ordering seeds (bulbs, etc.) or when looking up information in the library. Common names vary by nation, culture, and region, and sometimes the same common name is applied to different plants.

    Family: Rutaceae (rue or citrus)

origin:

    Origin: Southeast Asia

Orange Peel: The peel of the fruit picked before it has ripened, [then] dried and cut.

nutritional information:

Limonoids are a terpene subclass found in citrus peels. Studies suggest that limonoids help clean and protect the lungs.

Oranges are high in folic acid. Folic acid helps the cardiovascular system.

selection:

    Reason to choose organic:
Oranges have the number 19 highest pesticide load of 45 common fruits and vegetables studied in 2006 by the Environmental Working Group and is therefore a prime candidate for switching to organic. The EWA explains, “While washing and rinsing fresh produce may reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel. The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.”
According to USDA and FDA tests on commercially grown foods collected between 2000 and 2005, orange has a 85.1% (percentage) of samples tested with detectable pesticides, a 34.6% (percentage) of samples with two or more pesticides, a 1.3 average number of pesticides found in a sample, an average of 0.100 parts per million of all pesticides found, and 18 different pesticides found in use growing oranges. These toxic pesticides don’t apply to organic foods.

storage:

Storage: Eat oranges within a week (seven days) of purchase.

Juicing: Orange is an excellent base juice for other juices, particularly carrot. Use sweet eating oranges. Seville (Temple) oranges are too bitter for juicing. Blood oranges are sweeter than regular oranges and turn your juice red.

Tom Selleck is falsely claiming “orange juice from Florida, ounce for ouncce there’s nothing else quite like it, packed with nutrients it can power you and your kids through a busy day.”

Tom Selleck knows that any orange regardless of where it is grown (Florida oranges, California oranges, even Egyptian oranges) is the same fruit and has essentially the same nutritional profile. Any orange juice from anywhere in the entire world is quite like Florida orange juice.

Tom Selleck should also know that nutritionally orange juice and apple juice are very similar. For that matter, orange juice and grapefruit kuice are very similar, except that orange juice is naturally sweeter and grapefruit juice is naturally more nutritious.

Tom Selleck should know that processed juices are a poor nutrient. Juice is electrolytically alive for only 10-30 minutes after being squeezed.

Tom Selleck should know that processed orange juice is mostly simple carbohydrates and causes a very bad spike in blood sugar, followed by a bad depression in blood sugar and places a harsh load on the pancreas and can over time cause severe health problems, including Type 2 adult onset diabetes.

Tom Selleck should know that processed orange juice is nutritionally very similar (quite like) apple juice and carbonated sodas in terms of dumping bad sugars very quickly into the bloodstream.

Tom Selleck should know that both children and adults should avoid anything other than occassional use of any processed range juice, including Florida orange juice.

Tom Selleck should know that his advocacy of children drinking Florida orange juice on a regular basis is extremely dangerous to the long term health of children and that he is personally causing great harm to America’s health.

Be careful about substitutions for preparations that will be ingested or come in contact with the skin. These substitutions do not apply to medical uses. See the article on the Sun for a list of herbal substitutes for orange.

Using essential oils: Essential oils are just too concentrated and too expensve to use without dilution. This conservation is typical of the use of essential oils in spells and other magick. It is wise to test a bit of any essential oil on your inner wrist before use. If any irritation occurs, do not use the essential oil. Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets and away from heat and light. See the article on essential oils for detailed information on how to mix and use essential oils.
