Use the botanical name when ordering seeds (bulbs, etc.) or when looking up information in the library. Common names vary by nation, culture, and region, and sometimes the same common name is applied to different plants.
The edible berries are rich in vitamin C. The sharp thorns make is difficult to harvest the berries.
The berries are made into candy in the Ukraine. The purple fruits of Berberis microphylla (calafate), Berberis heterophylla (calafate), and Berberis darwinii (michay) are made into jams and infusions in Patagonia in Argentina and Chili (the calafate and michay are symbols of Patagonia). The dried fruit of Berberis vulgaris is known as zereshk in Iran (Persia). Zereshk is used for jam, juice, and fruit rolls, and cooked with rice for chicken dishes (adding a tart flavor).
